Welcome to Somerset Rugby Referees’ Society
Annual Dinner
Somerset RRS is hosting this year's annual dinner at Frome RFC on Saturday, May 1st.
The evening will include a three-course meal, awards and guest speaker David Trick.
Tickets, priced at £25 per person, can be obtained from contacting Clare Daniels on either 07967 092928 or via email (under people section).
Following the success of last year's event, it is hoped members give this season's dinner their full support.
A Message from our President
Welcome to the new Somerset Rugby Referees’ website, I hope you find it informative and helpful.
I am privileged to head The Society, which has over one hundred members, all of whom are dedicated to rugby and in particular Somerset rugby.
Our Executive Committee is both lively and progressive and works hard to assist referees in their development, from the beginner to the hopeful international.

Our referees referee for enjoyment. There is no better feeling after a game than 30+ players thanking you for allowing them their Saturday afternoon’s enjoyment.
There is though room for ambition, almost every referee would like to improve and referee at a higher level, just as players would all like to play in the first team or at a ‘better’ club. We get independent assessments of referees’ potential by sending them to games in other counties. As with players some referees will but most have to settle for ‘their level’, which as stated is still enjoyable.
The few that make it to the top of our Society are put forward for promotion to the South West Group, some make it but some do not. If a referee is successful with the Group there is a chance of moving higher still but again not everyone does. Promotion is not like a ladder, a series of equal steps it is like a pyramid the higher you go the fewer chances there are for further promotion.
Two of our referees that have made it to the top are Tony Spreadbury and Clare Daniels. Tony has recently retired from top flight refereeing and Clare is looking forward to more ladies internationals and the next Ladies World Cup
Looking to the future we have two momentous occasions coming up. The first, September 2014, is The Society’s 125th Anniversary. As you will see at the top of this screen we led the way, you can see the minutes of the original committee meeting under ‘Information’. The second is the Rugby World Cup coming home in 2015.
We anticipate a marked rise in interest in the game as the World Cup approaches and the need for referees to increase. So if you would like to be a part of the celebrations join us and enjoy yourself.
